How To Maintain Your Hot Water System
Nothing is more refreshing and energising than a nice hot shower at the start or end of the day. Living in Australia, we’ve come to assume hot water will flow once we turn the shower on. But how many times have you been greeted with the opposite and have had to turn it off quickly?
Like most household appliances, there’s a tendency for us to adopt the attitude “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it”. But it’s wise to give your hot water system a health check every now and then. Follow these simple steps to maintain your hot water system.
1. Check for cracks and other signs of wear and tear
It doesn’t take more than 5 minutes to do this monthly inspection. Cracks can lead to water seepage, which can be costly if left unattended. In addition, it can lead to bigger problems like leaks. Remember, your hot water system isn’t immune to wear and tear. Regular checks enable you to spot them early.
2. Check the relief valve
Pressure can build up over time. The excess pressure needs to be released to keep your hot water system in good working condition. The relief valve is there for this reason. You don’t have to do this often. Doing it bi-annually should be sufficient. But before you do this, refer to the manual that comes with your system.
3. Check your sacrificial node
This is the rod that hangs inside the tank. Its main purpose is to attract minerals and other impurities that can damage your tank. The node itself will become damaged during the course of performing this function; hence, its name ‘sacrificial node’. It will rust and degenerate. When this happens, you’ll need to replace it.
4. Drain the water out
It’s good practice to drain the water out every 6 months. When you do, you’ll be flushing out impurities and other stuff that have accumulated over time in the tank. Unless you have a transparent hot water tank, it’s impossible to know what’s in it. Hence, draining the water out is the next best thing to do to ensure the longevity of your hot water system. It’s the equivalent of a body detox program.
5. Turn it off
If you’re planning to be away for a while, for example, a couple of weeks or more, it’s a good idea to turn off your hot water system. Giving it a ‘rest’ will not impair its functionality when you need to use it again. It’s pointless to keep heating water when it will not be used.
6. Get a professional inspection
Finally, it’s best to get a licensed plumber to inspect your hot water system. We recommend getting your system serviced at least every two years, but different models will require more frequent inspections. Check with the manufacturer for your model’s requirements.

How often should I book a service for my hot water system?
In general, we recommend booking a service for hot water units at least every 2 years. However, different types of water heaters require more maintenance the others. For example, continuous flow systems and heat pumps should be service annually.
Can I adjust the temperature for my home’s continuous flow system?
On most continuous flow systems, the temperature can be adjusted. However, this must be performed by a licensed plumber to ensure it’s done safely and does not void any warranty on your system.
What do I need to consider if I’m replacing my hot water unit?
If you’re replacing an existing hot water unit, it’s a great opportunity to consider a few factors that could leave you better off in the long run. This includes factors like the type of hot water unit that suits you best and how much hot water your home uses.
