Here’s what Jarrod had to say about his career in construction plumbing:
Can you give us a quick overview of your experience in managing projects? In early 2022, my family and I relocated to the Mid-North Coast region. During this time, I have had the privilege of managing several projects for O'Brien Plumbing & Relining Coffs Harbour, including The Shoreline Development and now onto the CODA Development for Paynter Dixon. Prior to my relocation, I was based on the Gold Coast, where I worked on several notable projects in the commercial hydraulic sector. Working alongside exceptional leaders, I gained extensive experience in project management, which has proved invaluable in my current position today.
Can you walk me through the timeline and milestones of this project? CODA Development caught my attention when we visited Coffs Harbour before deciding to move to the area. I saw that this project would be a great opportunity. From signing the contract to breaking ground in June of last year, it was a massive milestone for O'Brien Plumbing & Relining Coffs Harbour. Now, in March 2024, we are on the fourth level which is a transfer deck, this then opens up to the busiest level of 13 units per floor. This is a great achievement for the project. Over the coming months, we will see the project moving forward at an incredible pace with the build expected to top out on level 13 in July this year.
What specific plumbing tasks are involved in this project? O'Brien’s have taken on the hydraulic scope for the development, including stormwater and sanitary drainage, copper installation, water rough-ins, siphonic stormwater, and finishing with fit-off of PC items.
How do you ensure compliance with building codes and regulations? Our organisation has developed a comprehensive set of procedures to ensure that we fulfil all regulatory requirements for Class Two Builds. This requires close collaboration with our management team, estimator and hydraulic consultant to make sure that compliance is within the regulated design.
What measures do you take to ensure the safety of your team and the worksite? Working in close collaboration with our office team and health and safety representative, I have established a stringent safety regime within our workplace. This involves conducting daily morning pre-starts, which outline the specific tasks assigned to each employee, and a comprehensive briefing that details the daily worksite operations. Additionally, we hold weekly toolbox meetings where workplace health and safety acts are incorporated to ensure that all employees are informed and aware of any potential hazards. Through these measures, we are committed to maintaining the highest safety standards in our workplace.
What technology or software do you use to streamline project management tasks? The company uses cutting-edge technology and software that effectively cater to project tasks ahead. Sim-Pro is utilized for all programming costs and reports that are frequently used to track the progress of the project. Asana serves as the task management platform of choice. Trimble GPS systems are used to execute all design set-outs on the site. The company’s commitment to delivering quality results is reflected in the incorporation of advanced technology and software.
How do you stay informed about industry trends and advancements in plumbing materials or techniques? Our organisation regularly attends industry events alongside our major suppliers to remain informed of the latest developments and the future of the plumbing sector. By staying ahead of the curve and leveraging our partnerships, we are committed to providing our customers with the highest quality products and services.
What strategies do you employ to maintain a high level of efficiency and productivity on the job site? We have an exceptional team of highly skilled tradespeople who deliver outstanding results. In my experience, a strong team on site is the cornerstone of productivity and efficiency, and I am confident that we have exactly that. Trust is a crucial component of our team’s success, and I have no doubt that we have established a culture of trust and respect among all team members.
As a project manager, what’s the most unexpected or memorable situation you’ve encountered on a job site? I often encounter unexpected situations as a part of my daily routine. It’s how I respond to these situations is crucial to achieving a successful outcome. One of the most memorable experiences on my journey was being a part of the team working on Project 272 in Mermaid Beach. This project was an icon for one of Australia’s largest builders. Witnessing the tower transform at an unimaginable pace, building and working inside units that are worth exceptional value was an amazing experience. The job offers many unforgettable experiences, but the ultimate satisfaction comes from seeing the end result of what your team has accomplished.
