Solar panel value and savings

Solar cuts the amount of electricity you buy from the grid, which lowers your bills and protects you from future price rises. Perth gets more sunshine than almost any other Australian capital, so a well designed system produces plenty of power year round. Surplus energy can be exported for credits, or stored in a battery for use at night.

That depends on your usage, your system size, your tariff and how much of your solar you use yourself. Savings are highest when you run appliances during daylight hours, such as air conditioning, pool pumps, dishwashers and EV charging.

Export credits are worth less than the electricity you avoid buying, so self consumption is where the value sits. We review your bills before quoting so the numbers we give you are based on your home, not averages.

Most Perth homes recover the cost over several years, then keep saving for decades after that. The payback depends on system size, install cost, your tariff and how much solar you use during the day. Batteries usually have a different payback to panels, so it helps to look at them as two parts of the same decision.

Generally yes. Lower running costs are attractive to buyers, and a quality system with documentation, remaining warranty and monitoring history is viewed more favourably than an old or unbranded one. There is no fixed dollar figure, but solar helps a home stand out.

Choosing your system

Bigger is not automatically better. The right size is based on how much power you use, when you use it, your roof orientation and pitch, shading, and any network export limits.

It is also worth allowing for what is coming, such as an EV, a pool, electric appliances or a battery. We size systems off your actual bills and roof layout.

In Perth, a north facing system with little shading typically produces around 4 to 4.5kWh per day for every 1kW installed, averaged over the year. Output changes with season, orientation, pitch, shading and weather. We provide an estimate based on your roof rather than a generic figure.

Waiting mostly means paying full price for electricity in the meantime. The federal STC discount also reduces each year until the scheme ends in 2030, so the upfront incentive gets smaller over time. If your bills are already high, there is little benefit in delaying.

Rebates and approvals

Yes. Solar systems receive Small-scale Technology Certificates under the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, applied as an upfront discount, and the scheme is scheduled to end in 2030. Batteries may qualify for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program and the WA Residential Battery Scheme. We apply everything you are eligible for to your quote.

We do. We prepare and lodge the Western Power application, submit the compliance paperwork after commissioning, and guide you through retailer registration. We follow the application up and keep you posted. Occasionally Western Power or Synergy needs something directly from the property owner, and if that happens we tell you exactly what is required.

Standard residential applications are often approved within a few business days when the paperwork is right. Larger systems, three phase installs, commercial systems and requests above the standard export limit need extra assessment and take longer.

The Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme, which pays eligible Synergy customers for surplus solar exported to the grid. Rates are time based, with a higher rate in the afternoon and evening and a lower rate through the middle of the day. Rates are set by the WA Government and change from time to time, so check Synergy’s DEBS page for current figures. Using your own solar is worth more than exporting it.

Sometimes. The standard limit is 1.5kW per phase, with up to 5kW of inverter capacity on single phase. Western Power’s Export Limit Assessment lets you apply for more, and the outcome depends on the capacity of your local network. Plenty of homes install a larger system and accept the standard limit, since the house can still use everything it generates.

Installation

Most homes are done in one day. Battery installs, backup circuits, switchboard upgrades and larger or commercial systems can run into a second day. Design, Western Power approval and equipment ordering are all completed before the install date.

You do not need to be there all day, but we ask that someone over 18 is home at the start and finish. That way we can walk you through the site setup at the start and show you how the system and monitoring work once it is commissioned.

A correctly installed system will not damage your roof. Mounting brackets are matched to your roof type and any penetrations are sealed using approved methods. We inspect the roof first for existing issues such as cracked tiles or rust, and if we break a tile during the install, we replace it.

Same day, once the system has been tested and commissioned. Power for your own home starts immediately. Exporting to the grid may take longer if your retailer still has to reconfigure or replace your meter.

The days are shorter and the sun sits lower, so panels receive less light and there is more cloud. Winter output is normally around half of what you see in summer. It is expected behaviour, not a fault.

Yes, at reduced output. Panels respond to daylight, not direct sun, so you will still generate through light cloud. Heavy cloud drops production further but rarely to nothing.

For most Perth homes, once every year or two is enough, and winter rain does a lot of the work. Cleaning matters more if you are near the coast, on a dusty road, under trees or dealing with bird droppings. Never get on the roof yourself to do it.
