But what is involved in the installation process? Is the NBN provider involved? How long will it take? And how much can you expect to spend?

What is NBN Technology? 

The National Broadband Network is a data communication technology that comes in several types. Each technology type is connected to the network and differs in regards to how much copper they utilise or whether they operate via wireless or satellite connections. The NBN consists of seven technology types:

-Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)

-Fibre to the Building (FTTB)

-Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)

-Fibre to the Node (FTTN)

-Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)

-NBN Fixed Wireless

-Sky Muster satellite

When inquiring about an NBN installation and technology types, it’s best to speak with an experienced technician who can help you understand what you need and the process moving forward.

What is Installed During an NBN Installation

For an installation job, an NBN technician will:

-connect to or install an NBN utility box outside your home

-install an NBN connection box inside the premises

-run a coaxial cable between the internal connection and external connection box

If your home already has an existing network, the technician may set up a hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) cable to the closest fibre node to your home, completing the connection to the NBN access network.

What is a Standard NBN Installation?

Standard NBN installations allow for 60m of cabling from the street to the NBN Utility Box, which is placed on the outside of your home. The Utility Box should be placed in a location easily accessible, off the ground, and clear of obstructions.

What is a Non-Standard NBN Installation?

If you have special requirements, the NBN Co technician may classify your install as Non-Standard.

Some considerations that make a Non-Standard install may include:

Where more than 12m of cabling is required to connect your modem to the nbn™ connection (includes fixings); or

Where more than two walls (cavity drops) need to be crossed to complete the cable run; or

Where more than 25m of additional cabling is required to connect your service.

If a Non-Standard Install is required, the NBN Co will provide a quote for any additional costs prior to starting your installation.

How Long Does an NBN Installation Take?

How long an NBN installation will take will depend on whether or not your property is NBN ready, as well as NBN technician availability. If your property is NBN ready and/or you already have NBN technology installed, then the installation may take between 2-10 days. However, if your property is not NBN ready then the process of connecting fibre to the premises (FTTP) may take up to several weeks, as you’ll need to have all the necessary NBN equipment installed.

If you are concerned about timeframes, it is best to discuss your unique circumstances (i.e. do you have a NBN plan provider, is this a new home, old home but never connected or has the property been previously connected to the NBN) with a qualified technician. An experienced professional can provide you with specific information regarding your property, such as whether your installation will be standard or not, where to have the NBN connection box installed in your home, and more. 

How Long Does it Take for NBN to Activate After Installation

If your premises is NBN ready at the time you order your plan, most providers estimate ten working days to set up a new connection. The time it takes to activate your plan can depend on your technology type.
