At O’Brien®, being a responsible business goes beyond the work we do for customers — it’s also about how we manage what comes out of our operations.
That’s why we’ve partnered with the Kwinana Waste-to-Energy Recovery Facility in Western Australia — a state-of-the-art plant that converts non-recyclable waste into renewable electricity, helping reduce landfill at scale.

A smarter path for waste
The Kwinana facility processes up to 460,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste each year, diverting over 98% from landfill and generating enough electricity to power 55,000 homes.
By converting waste into energy and recovering materials for reuse, the process ensures almost nothing goes to waste — turning a challenge into a practical solution.
What this means for O’Brien®
Seven of our nine WA service centres now send waste to Kwinana, diverting around 100 tonnes from landfill annually.
Combined with our broader waste recovery programs across Australia, we’re on track
to prevent close to 500 tonnes of waste from entering landfill in 2026.
These results are driven by consistent, everyday actions — from effective waste separation to responsible disposal — across our network.
Scaling our impact
Our work in WA is part of a broader national effort. We’re expanding landfill reduction initiatives across key regions, including New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, with a focus on proven recovery solutions and targeted site programs.
Building a more sustainable O’Brien®
Facilities like Kwinana are part of the solution — but real impact comes from how we operate every day.
By improving how waste is sorted, handled and reduced across our business, we’re lowering emissions, supporting a more circular economy, and building a more sustainable future.
